Description of the Hatirjheel Lake
The entire construction of the HatirjheelLake and its surroundings has spent BDT19, 710 million with 392 acres of
land area. Among the amount, BDT10, 480 million was used up in obtaining the
site. From the area, the RAJUK (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha) belongs 46
percent of the land along with 81 acres of walking courts, 1 acre for
Bangladesh Television (BTV) and 141 acres are belonged to the publics.
The project of Hatirjheel was permitted first in 2007 and
the construction will complete within 3 years, in the June of 2010. But, the
construction was started in the last about 2008 and it needed more half of a
year to complete. The total expenditures were organized by the RAJUK (BDT1,
113.7 billion), LGED (BDT2, 760 million) and WASA (BDT866.95 million). The
Hatirjheel Lake holds more than 4.81 billion liters of water during the rainy
season and about 3.06 billion liters of water in the dry season. The lake is
the biggest water body inside Dhaka city.
A Brief History of the Hatirjheel Lake
It’s said that the elephants of the Pilkhana region of Dhaka
has used for the purposes of bathing in the water body. The word ‘Hati’ means
the ‘elephant’ in English and the full meaning is coming as the ‘lake of
Elephant’. This way the name ‘Hatirjheel’ was spoken by the people of this area
and it got the name its own. The head consultant of the project ‘Hatirjheel –
Begunbari’ is the famous urban planner and architect, Iqbal Habib, described
about the name. He said that the king of the Bhawal period in Dhaka has used
the place for taming elephants in this locality of Pilkhana. He also added that
the elephants are also taken into the water body of Hatirpool and Elephant
Road.
Location of the Hatirjheel Lake
The location of the Hatirjheel is almost in the center of
the Dhaka city. The latitude and the longitude of the locations are
respectively 23.7495747 and 90.3967635. On the other hand, the Hatirjheel’s
location has coordinated of 23°44′58.47″N 90°23′48.35″E. It’s situated in the
middle of Maghbazar, Niketon, Banasree, Tejgaon, Badda and Gulshan areas. The
Hatirjheel Lake’s Bridge has made an easy transportation facility for the
people of these areas. It’s a perfect location for the transport system.
Grand Inauguration of the Hatirjheel Lake
The project of ‘Hatirjheel – Begunbari’ was inaugurated by
the Honorable Prime Minister (PM) of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina in 2nd January of
2013. Before inaugurating the project, the PM has taken a look over the area of
the Hatirjheel. She referred it as the gift of the New Year to the residents of
Dhaka city and the people of the country as well. After the inauguration, it
was opened for the common people to use. The area of Hatirjheel was decorated
with the flattering flags and multi-colored flowers on the eve of the
inauguration. The evening was special for the dwellers of the areas with a
special fireworks display around the project. The Hatirjheel Lake’s bridge is
stretched from the Hotel Sonargaon through Banasree.
