Lalbagh Fort: The 17th Century’s Top Historical place in Dhaka

Lalbagh Fort is also known as Fort Aurangabad, which is the incomplete Mughal construction of the 17th century. It’s standing on the southwestern part of the bank of River Buriganaga of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The complex was started to construct in 1678 by the Mughal emperor Muhammad Azam Shah, the son of Aurangazeb. He was not able to complete the complex and hand over to his inheritor, Shayesta Khan, but he didn’t complete it during his period in Dhaka up to 1688, because there was his daughter, Pari Bibi’s tomb. A Short History of Lalbagh Fort

The third son of Mughal emperor Aurangazeb, Prince Muhammad Azam, was started the construction work of Lalbagh Fort during his vice-royalty in Bengal in 1678. He resided for 15 months in Bengal and the fort was not completed when his father called him away. After his departure from Bengal, Shayesta Khan, was employed as the new administrator of Dhaka region.

In the year 1684, the daughter of Shayesta Khan, Pari Bibi, who died in the forte and he left the construction job of the fort thinking that the fort is unlucky. As a result, the dream of Muhamamd Azam remained incomplete and the popularity of Dhaka was lost when Shayesta Khan left Dhaka and the capital was moved to Murshidabad. At last, in 1844 the place got its name Lalbagh Fort instead of Aurangabad.

A Short Description of Lalbagh Fort

The Fort of Lalbagh is the combination of 3 buildings, such as the mosque, Pari Bibi’s tomb and the Diwani-i-Aam along with 2 gates and a part of the somewhat damaged defense wall. There is a great bastion in the corner’s defense wall of the southeast and north side contains stable, the utility buildings and administration block. Its western part has a beautiful roof-garden with a water reservoir and fountains.

There is a water tunnel with fountains that are connected with 3 buildings to each other. In Diwani-i-Aam included s one storied Hammam Khana (Bath house) and there is a room in underground to supply boiled water, which is found from the recent excavation of the Fort.

Visiting Hours and Entry Fees of Lalbagh Fort

Season: October to March- Tuesday-Saturday, Open 9a.m.to 5p.m.            and Monday to Sunday, Open 1.30p.m. to 5p.m.

Season: April to September - Tuesday-Saturday, Open 10a.m. to 6p.m. and Monday to Sunday, Open 1.30p.m. to 5p.m.

Interval times are for Friday’s Jumma Prayer from 12:30 pm to 2 pm. Weekly holiday is Sunday along with Eid holidays.
