Armenian Church in Dhaka of the Holy Renaissance to 18th Century

The Armenian Church is a historic architectural construction of the 18th century and a significant monument that is situated in Armanitola of old Dhaka, Bangladesh. Short History of the Armenian Church in Dhaka

The presence of Armenians in Dhaka was in huge in 17th & 18th century. The Persian king, Shah Abbas deported more than 40,000 Armenian businessmen to New Julfa and Isfahan. When they arrived at the Bengal established their trading of textile, leather and jute and the Mughal recognized them in the 17th century. At this period they constructed a church to continue their religious activities. The colony of Armenian is still known as Armanitola in Dhaka.

During the visit of Mother Teresa in Dhaka in 1996, she stayed in a compound of the church. There is an old graveyard of 350 people with a statue and it was bought from Kolkata.


Architecture of the Armenian Church

The Armenian Church is about 230 meters (750 feet) in length, having 4 doors and 27 windows. The church was completed in 1781 and it was consecrated by Bishop Ephreim.

At the present days, the church remains usually closed and it just becomes the subject of AFP and BBC documentaries. It has been an asset of the archaeological department of Bangladesh government.
