Aparajeyo Bangla – Inspiration of the Bangladeshi People

Aparajeyo Bangla (The Undefeatable Bangla) represents the inspiration of the Bangladeshi people in the Liberation War ’71. The sculpture has dedicated to the freedom fighters of the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 against Pakistani Junta. It’s located at the campus of the University of Dhaka, in front of the Arts Faculty Building. The making of the sculpture was started in 1973 under the supervision and with the design of the famous sculptor Sayed Abdullah Khalid. The authority of the DUCSU assisted him and his team by all means. A news reporter of the Daily Bangla, Shaleh Choudhury, had written an article about the sculpture. The article made to introduce it all over the world. The article has illuminated the Bangladeshi people through the sculpture.

There was a 3-feet long different sculpture in the place of Aparajeyo Bangla. The DUCSU authority started the construction work of the sculpture after breaking the old one. But, the construction was interrupted due to the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975. It was resumed in 1979 and the project was completed in the December of 1979.

Historical Significance of the Aparajeyo Bangla

After the end of the liberation war, the committee of the DUCSU proposed to make a sculpture in the memories of the glorious liberation war in 1971. In the sculpture of Sayed Abdullah Khalid have 3 statues. At the center is a statue of a farmer with a rifle on his shoulder and a grenade in his hand. This statue represents the common people of Bangladesh. There is a lady on the left of the farmer with first-aid box and indicating the nursing of women to the freedom fighters. On the left, there is a statue of a student who is wearing pants with a rifle holding in his hand. It represents the youth and the students of the liberation war.

For the design and making of the sculpture, the woman modern was a housewife named Hasina Ahmed. The model of a farmer was a student of the Dhaka University named Badrul Alam Banu. And the model of the student was another student of the Dhaka University named Sayed Hamid Maksud.

Construction of the Sculpture

The construction was made by the multi-talented artist, Abdullah Khalid. He was an excellent sculptor and was able to make impressive paintings at his canvas. The sculpture of the Aparajeyo Bangla is an icon in the campus of the Dhaka University. It’s reflecting the vigilance and indomitable freedom of the people of Bangladesh. At the time of making the sculpture, Khalid faced a huge opposition from the huge religious fanatics of the country. But, no-one could make him stop to construct the sculpture.

The reinforced concrete has used to build the sculpture of the Aparajeyo Bangla with a 4-inch coating. The sculpture is about 11 feet high and it was re-fabricated after engraving on the foundation. The models were closely observed by the artist, even their personality. The close assistance of Abdullah Khalid made them enable to complete the portrayal properly.

Documentary about the Aparajeyo Bangla

In the 40th Independence Day (in 26th March 2011) a documentary film was released about the sculpture to make it memorable. The film was produced and directed by Shafiul Wahid Helal. The film has shown the war background of 1971 with the sheds of light that attempted with religious fanatics to demolish the structure.
