Dhaka Gate – The Historical Mughal Construction in Dhaka

The Dhaka Gate is also recognized as the Ramna Gate or Mir Jumla’s Gate. This is a monument and believed that it was built by the Mughal Emperor Mir Jumla II. The Dhaka Gate is now located near the campus of the Dhaka University. One of its parts is near the area of CRER, Center for Renewable Energy Research and the other parts near the Mausoleum of the ‘Great Three Leaders’.


Background of the Dhaka Gate’s Construction

The Mughal Emperor Jahangir had appointed Islam Khan as the Subedar of the Bengal in 1606 A.D. Islam Khan successfully led the campaign against of Baro Bhuiya and relocate the Bengal’s capital in Dhaka. He named the city after the Emperor, Jahangir, Jahangirnagar in 1610 A.D. In the 17th century, Dhaka became the 12th biggest city in the world. The second son of the Emperor Shahjahan was selected as the Bangle’s subedar in 1651AD and he shifted the capital from Dhaka to Rajmahal. After fleeing of subedar Shah Shuja in 1660 AD in the fear of Mir Jumla II, Dhaka was restored as the Bangle’s capital.

Mir Jumla II was made the structures of the Dhaka Gate. It was built in the current Suharawardy Garden in Dhaka and was familiar as the Bagh-e-Badshahi (The Royal Garden) at that time. It was the biggest gardens that were built with the Mughals. After the restoration of the capital in Dhaka in 1660AD, the area of the province was started to expand rapidly. During the period of Mir Jumla II, the city stretched from the west Jafarabad to the north Tongi Bridge and up to the Postogola in the east. There was established a residential area and the Dhaka Gate was in front of the area. It was recognized as Chistia and Shujatpur. At that time, Dhaka faced huge attacks from the Magh pirates and the Portuguese. The consideration of making the Dhaka Gate, perhaps, came from the attacks that the researcher's belief.

Structure of the Dhaka Gate

The Dhaka Gate is yellow in color and constitutes with three main parts, one pillar and two walls. It both walls is shaped similar to a slide and it has two pillars in each slide that helped to stand it over 400 years. The height of the pillar is about 15 feet, that’s standing in the middle of the two walls. So, the gate contains total five pillars, which was the entrance to go into the Bangle’s capital city, Dhaka. The structure’s height varies from 7 feet to 15 feet. But, it was designed uniquely. There was a large cornice shaped framework on the top of the all pillars.
