The Holy Buddhist Temple of the Dharmarajika in Dhaka

The holy Buddhist temple of the Dharmarajika is located at Sabujbagh, Kamalapur in the Dhaka city. It’s the chief Buddhist monastery and temple in Dhaka and constructed in 1962.  There was a temporary Dharmarajika Buddhist monastery in 1951 in Dhaka city and was permanently relocated to the above stated area. It was built to conduct the activities of the Buddhist community, such as prayer, meditation and teaching. It got huge decoration during the Buddha Purnima (Prabarana Purnima) and gathered a lot of people from the Buddhist and other caste as well.


The Dharmarajika & Buddhism in Bangladesh

The Dharmarajika Buddhist Temple is the main place for the Buddha religion people in Dhaka. There are many sculptures of black stones and one is made of marble stone. A medium sized pond is inside the temple along with a big golden statue is standing on a lotus of the Buddha. It has a teaching center of Pali Language and a prayer hall in the temple. It’s open from sunrise to sunset, all day long.

According to the evidence, the Dharmarajika of Buddhist was first established in 1951 in the city and was permanently shifted in the location at Sabujbag, Kamalapur in Dhaka in 1962. It’s the first Buddhist temple in Dhaka after the partition of India in 1947. The first attempt is to establish a new Buddhist center for praying, teaching and meditation in 1951 by the “Buddha Kristi Prochar Songha”. The Buddhism in Bangladesh was flourished in Dhaka from this place of the Dharmarajika. It had branches in Bikrampur, Narshingdhi, Savar and Dhamrai. These centers were operating from the consultation of the Dhaka Dharmarajika Buddhist temple.

A Brief History of the Dhaka Dharmarajika Buddhist Temple

The history records say that the Great King Ashoka had built about 84 thousand of Votive Stapus all over the Indian sub-continent. It was known as the Dharmarajika. The similar Votive Stupa was located in Bikrampur, Narshingdhi, Savar and Dhamrai, so it’s easy to understand the establishing of that one is from the king Ashok’s Dharmarajika. In the purpose to commemorate its historical name, the Buddhist monastery of Dhaka was renamed as the Dharmarajika Buddhist Temple or Monastery. It was done under the direction and supervision of late Mahasanghanayaka Visuddhananda Mahathero, Late Banghish Thero, (the former President of BBKPS), and the current President of the BKSP. Moreover, the members and other followers were helped to establish the monastery. The Relics of the Great Scholar named Atish Dipankar was taken in the BKSP in 1978 and it was installed in the Dharmarajika Buddhist Temple. The government of Bangladesh has assisted to perform the installation with all kinds of support. After arriving of the ash relics of the Buddhist scholar, the BKPS has played a vital role to revive the Buddhism in Bangladesh.

Many types of social and welfare activities are committing from the Dharmarajika. They keep in mind that ‘to love a living thing is a love of the God’. As a result, they are implementing many useful and cost-effective programs for the people of Bangladesh in the name of humanity. For example, relief works during flood, cyclone and other humanitarian crisis. They are also operating many orphanages, schools, free water supply for the poor and underprivileged people of the country.
