University of Dhaka – The Oxford of the East


The University of Dhaka is also known as the Dhaka University (DU) and referred like the proverb ‘The Oxford of the East’. This is the most ancient university in the modern Bangladesh. It was established by the British Raj in 1921 and imprints a contributing significantly in the history of the modern Bangladesh. After the sub-continent’s partition, it turned into the center point of democratic and progressive movement in Pakistan. The students and teachers of the university have played a significant role to raise the voice of the Bengali nationalism and then the independence of the country. The distinguished alumni of the university are, including Fazlur Rahman Khan (also known as FR Khan, a famous Structural Engineer), Dr. Muhammad Yunus (Nobel Peace Prize winner and Microcredit’s professor), Muhammad Shahidullah (renowned educator, linguist and philologist), Serajul Islam Choudhury (leading public writer and intellectual), Rehman Sobhan (social economist) and many more. The associations are also enjoyed with Kazi Nazrul Islam (Bangladesh’s national poet), Satyendra Nath Bose, and Vijayaraghavan.

A Brief History of the University of Dhaka

The University of Dhaka was established in the Dhaka College at its former building. In 1873, the Dhaka College was transferred to the Bahadur Shah Park. Then it shifted to the Curzon Hall and it was the first university institution. The establishment of the varsity was a reward of the Partition of Bengal in 1905. The partition made Dhaka the capital of the separated province of the East Bengal and Assam. Lord Curzon had declared to establish a university in Dhaka. But, there were hearty contributions of the Dhaka’s Nawab and Khwaja Salimulllah to build the Dhaka University.

The opinion of the public was invited in 1913 before of shaping the university. Dr. Philip Joseph Hartog was the first VC (Vice-Chancellor) of Dhaka University, who was the former academic registrar for 17 years of the London University. In 1921, The University was established under the act of the Indian Legislative Council for the Dhaka University in 1920. Lord Ronadshay, the Honorable Chancellor, had designated a life member Nawab Syed Shamshul Huda and the first provost designated Sir Ahmed Fazlur Rahman, who was formerly in the Aligarh Muslim University.

The academic activities of the university were begun on 1st July, 1921 with 3 faculties, including Science, Arts and Law with 12 departments. There were 3 dormitories to stay for the students, such as Dacca Hall, Salimullah Muslim Hall and Jagannath Hall. The students and teachers of the Dhaka University played a vital role in the movement of the Bengali Language at the time of official language question on the East Pakistan (present Bangladesh). The movement was started from the university and the students gathered to protest against the government of Pakistan. The Pakistani junta fired openly on the rally and killed huge quantities of students, common people. And then there was made a monument in the memories of the Martyrs, ‘Shaheed Minar’ by the students of the Dhaka University.
